The earliest records with reference to Avery's Creek are found in early deed books for Buncombe County dating to the 1790s. About 480 acres, including the land surrounding the mouth of Avery's Creek, were first sold to Mr. Weightstill Avery by the state. Mr. Avery was North Carolina's first Attorney General. He never lived on the land himself, but was a land speculator- buying up land from the state and reselling it for profit.
In 1806, the land was sold to Mr. Michael Israel, who left the land to his two sons (Johnson and Isom). This is only the beginning of the Avery's Creek story!
The Avery's Creek Community Development Club was officially organized in the 1980s and incorporated as a 501c3 non-profit entity. It was developed to improve the community and help solve local problems. The area has changed over the years and the work of the Community Club has adapted to meet changing needs.
